Deals with the Devil: A Brief Musical History
Deal With The Devil
Last week, I was rooting through the spam mail in my inbox and found an offer for a credit card. Luckily, I had been smart enough to follow a friend's advice and I applied for and gotten my own credit card – in my name only – very shortly after Peter moved out, knowing how important it is to get credit in my own name. Still, I do look over these offers just in case they have a great balance transfer rate and a good regular interest rate. At this point in my finances, I could really use the extra money that I might be able to get out of a favorable offer.
You can imagine my surprise when I clicked into this thing and saw what I was sure had to be a typo.
You probably need to re-read that. I know I did. But I was right on the first read. The annual percentage rate was a whopping fifty-nine point nine percent. In addition to that, if offered a application fee, and a annual fee, all for the priviledge of a 0 credit limit, which immediately drops to 5 upon approval, because they take out your annual fee right away.
All I could think of was "How desperate would you have to be to take this offer?" Unbelievable! And my credit rating isn'tthatbad – can you imagine how much worse they'd make it if it was? There's even some fine print at the bottom that states that I might not get this particular rate, if my credit report shows "issues". What else could they do? Ninety percent? With a 0 annual fee? And I have to send them my firstborn child?
I may not be in fabulous financial shape, but thank God, I'm not anywhere near the point of having to sign a deal with that kind of devil.
